Art Work

  • Couture
My collage and mixed media art is based on using the vintage photos, post cards, and papers I've found at antique markets and estate auctions over the years. I love the look of old newspapers next to newly made tinted tissue papers, or some vintage lace scrapes next to some retro polka dot wrapping paper. I've been collecting vintage papers long before I started using them in my art work. It was like kismet that I eventually included the "stash" into my work.

More recently I have started to work in the encaustic medium. Working in hot wax has been like opening up a candy store for me...I love it!!! The idea of putting together the collage and encaustic is so inviting, I am always anxious to get working on the next piece.

I've also begun to work more abstractly always changing up on the design factor. I never pictured myself as an abstract artist, but I am enjoying the challenge that the elements and principles can throw at you.

Enjoy browsing my blog. I don't fancy myself a writer, I just present these things as I see them. I'm always adding to my library, hence the long book list...and they are all my favorites! I'm still working on the fav music list, even though I have tons of CD's that I listen to while I work. Be sure and check out all the links I have provided...I love links...and these are my favorite people and places to visit. Have fun and thanks for visiting!!!

Kitty

Just for fun, here is a photo I took of Kitty today. He is just recently one year old. Kathleen brought him home from one of her friends. He likes to follow me around the house, but when it comes to sitting and cuddling, he will only sit on my husband's lap. His favorite toy is a stuffed Barbaro horse that he carries from room to room. He also likes to play with rubber bands. He is all boy and doesn't want you to fuss over him. I still talk baby talk to him and I think he secretly likes it, but he would probably never admit it in mixed company.Kitty

Linda Benton McCloskey Interview on MMCA

MMCA Marketplace is thrilled to introduce to you Linda McCloskey. Linda enjoys discovering creative ways of expression and totally keeps traditional rules of painting out of the picture. Since she loves to vary her palette of colors and new approaches, Linda's most recent works are experimental water media (abstract), mixed media, and encaustic (beeswax) with lots of texture and exciting color. Diversity with all its fascinating choices, intrigues her and is evident in her work. Since Linda begins a new work without a preconceived outcome in mind, she simply begins painting and then intuition, love, desire, and experience take over. As she begins to see images, she develops them further. No matter what the results, the works take Linda to a new destination.

Couture and the Alphabet Angel

I just recently finished two new encaustic art pieces. The first one is a piece that I have been struggling with for some time. The "Alphabet Angel" was started last year in a workshop that I took through the Art Association of Harrisburg http://www.artassocofhbg.com

The second piece, "Couture" just slid right out and I enjoyed the process of creating this one. It amazes me how easy some art comes out and how difficult other pieces are to complete.

It is a wonderfully simplistic book that guides you through the beginning steps of working with encaustics. Linda describes so clearly with words and plenty of photos the RIGHT way to use beeswax in your artwork.

I met Linda back in June in Beverly MA at the 2nd National Encaustic Conference at Monserat Collage. http://www.montserratencausticconference.blogspot.com/

Linda taught one of the workshops that I took following the conference and she is just a delightful person.

You will love her book!!!

Makes Me Happy

It always gives me a great sense of satisfactions when I look at my web site stats and see that someone is posting my art on their blogs and forums to use as an example for others to view. It means they are looking and appreciating. I always try to post back to thank them if I can, just to let them know how much I do appreciate them viewing my art. Hits to my web site are always a bonus to me and I am thrilled to find people who are seeking out my style of art.

Here is one that was posted yesterday: http://styl.eti.me/collage-art-works/

18_collage2_craftmonkey

(this collage is one of my favorites from the list done by craftmonkey http://craftmonkeys.typepad.com/photos/collage/collage2.html )

This is a wonderful collection of paper collages and I am so honored to be among this group of talented artists. I looked at every artist's site on this list (and bookmarked quite a few of them)and have gained so much inspiration from each one. This list was indeed a task to put together and it demonstrates the love of collage of the person who took the time to assemble it. A special thanks to that person!!!

Have a look and enjoy the collages!

Jim Thorpe PA

We had a wonderful weekend in Jim Thorpe PA. We stayed at The Inn, a beautifully decorated Victorian Inn on the main street. We sat out on the balcony on Friday night and enjoyed a bottle of wine while the rains from hurricane Ike poured down on the street.

Saturday was hot and humid as we walked in and out of the many shops on Broadway. We lucked out that evening with tickets for the Roger McGuinn concert at the Mauch Chunk Opera House. It was a great concert. For more information: http://www.jimthorpe.org

We also discovered a new gallery in Jim Thorpe. The Stabin Morykin Gallery is at the top of Broadway next to Flow, an excellent restaurant that we hope to visit next time we are in town. Have a look at the gallery http://www.thecccp.org

Out of Thin Air...again

I'm posting the article I wrote for the MMCA Blog here in case you didn't get a chance to read it there. Be sure to visit the new MMCA Marketplace and Blog http://www.mmcamarketplace.com

It has been an exciting beginning. We have had 10,000 hits within the first 48 hours!!!! Awesome!!!

Now here is the article:

Out of Thin Air

I have been thinking about artistic ideas and where they come from for artists. I have been asked by many viewing my artwork “where do you get your ideas?” Most of the time I just shrug and give the simple answer “they just come to me”, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Realistically, doing artwork is a process, a history, a constant learning, always practicing, ever playing, and accidental discovering. Some days it comes easy and the ideas and work flow out like liquid chocolate over nougat. I love those days! Some days are very labor intensive, try the same process twelve times, throw your hands up in the air and come back tomorrow. No one hopes for those days.

The most common misconception about artists is that we dream art up right out of our heads. The ideas, creativity, and talent just come to us “out of thin air”. I must confess, that I am not, and never have been one of those artists. Art is the process for me, it always has been. And some days the process is more intense than others.

Artists are observers, some by nature and some by training. We are all constantly observing our environment for clues of art. We are looking at the shadow play on the sidewalk. We are noticing the particular color of the trees and sky at dawn. We find interest in peeling paint on the side of a barn door. We are constantly looking for that clue that will spark an idea for the next work of art. After many years of training our eyes and mind to “see” it becomes our intrinsic nature to “know” when we see something of interest, something that we can use to our advantage to make our artwork sing.

As an artist, you can find many ways to keep the creative ideas flowing. I am constantly sketching, doodling, and writing ideas in the many journals and notebooks that I have strategically placed around the house. You never know where or when an idea will strike. I also find that being with other artists, like-minded people, is extremely stimulating for me. I take many classes and workshops, and always keep an open mind to new ideas and new ways to work old ideas. An even greater tool is the Internet. You can find artists of every medium online and view their work, even join groups that allow you to chat about art. MMCA is an excellent example of great groups online. http://www.mixedmediacollageartists.com.  Local museums and galleries are a plus if you live near a metropolitan area. Never pass up the opportunity to view art up close and in person. It makes a huge difference!

To sum this up, I recently found the “Top 10 Creative Rules of Thumb” from Charles Chic Thompson:

  1. The best way to get great ideas is to get lots of ideas and throw the bad ones away.
  2. Create ideas that are 15 minutes ahead of their time...not light years ahead.
  3. Always look for a second right answer.
  4. If at first you don't succeed, take a break.
  5. Write down your ideas before you forget them.
  6. If everyone says you are wrong, you're one step ahead. If everyone laughs at you, you're two steps ahead.
  7. The answer to your problem "pre-exists." You need to ask the right question to reveal the answer.
  8. When you ask a dumb question, you get a smart answer.
  9. Never solve a problem from its original perspective.
  10. Visualize your problem as solved before solving it."

So let’s get your creative thinking going and the ideas flowing!!!
